Need some car advice..Im trading in a 2008 Acura RL Loaded excellent condition with 32,000 miles ..what is the lowest I should take for the car? I don’t want to get ripped off when I go to a dealer.Also should I tell the dealer that I am doing a cash offer first and bargian then introduce the trade in?
Sorry, but KBB and Edmunds will not give you the realistic trade values on cars. Those two companies have done more to damage the car business than help it. We have a saying in the car business – “Mr Kelly has never bought a car”
When a dealer evaluates a trade, we typically go by the most recet auction reports to establish our offer. There are 2 reasons we use this method 1) If we need to sell yoru car at auction, we want to be as close to value so we dont lose money on the deal 2) If we wanted to buy a car like yours, we know we would pay about this much. If we can buy a car at auciton for, say $9000, we wont pay much more for yours.
On your car, the most recent auction values are:
Above Average – 31407
Average – 28925
Below Average – 26443
With 32k miles, that puts your car into the “average” column. So your offer would be $27-30,000
Dont try slipping the trade in at the last moment. ALl it does is force the process to start all over again. We have seen it all hundreds of times, so this wont get you any traction. IN fact, it may move the deal backwards. Just be up front about what you are doing, and work out a deal you both agree on.
Rememberm you negotiate a car deal every couple of years. I do it about 200 times a month. There is nothing I (and I mean any dealer) havent seen tried. The best approach is to be forthright, and work out a deal above teh table
